Know the Early Signs of Diabetes

Know the Early Signs of Diabetes

How can you determine if you have diabetes? The majority of the disease’s early symptoms are from having higher levels of glucose in your body than normal.

Warning signs of diabetes can be difficult to notice, especially in the case of type 2 diabetes. Some individuals only discover that they have diabetes after visiting their physician for issues stemming from damage caused by the disease.

While there are differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, both have the same warning signs, which we, as providers of primary care in Lanham, Maryland, would like to share with you.

  • Hunger and Fatigue
Your body transforms the food you consume into glucose, which cells use for energy. However, insulin is needed for the cells to obtain glucose. This cannot happen if your cells resist the insulin produced by your body or if your body cannot produce any or enough insulin. Because of this, you will have less energy and can be hungrier than normal.
  • Frequent Peeing and Being Thirstier
The average individual typically pees 4-7 times within 24 hours. People with diabetes, however, pee a lot more. Usually, the body absorbs glucose as it goes through the kidneys. But because of high blood sugar, your kidneys may be unable to bring them all in—making the body produce more urine.
  • Dry Mouth and Itchy Ski
Your body has less moisture for other functions since it is using liquids to urinate. You may experience dry mouth, itchy skin, and dehydration.
  • Blurred Vision
Fluctuating fluid levels in your body can cause the lenses in your eyes to swell. They may be unable to focus and can alter their shape.
